Listen: Fmr. Rep. J.C. Watts says both parties “totally invested in the failure of the other”

Former Rep. J.C. Watts made some stark statements about the problems in Washington and movements to give voters more choice in November. “I think [voters] legitimately are sick of both parties,” he said. “I think both parties are totally invested in the failure of the other.”

“The extremes are winning,” reports The Hill newspaper, “and the American system is losing.”

“The middle is getting squeezed,” former Republican Rep. Tom Davis told The Hill newspaper. But his comment vastly understates the crisis in the capital. Activists in both parties have declared war on moderates. The ideological gap between the two parties is widening rapidly. Paralysis is pervasive.

Study: Most Americans favor political compromise

“In numerous surveys over the past several decades, large majorities of Americans declared themselves in favor of political compromise in general,” report Amy Gutmann and Dennis Thompson in their book, The Spirit of Compromise.

On most issues, “openness to compromise is inversely linked to the importance people place on the issue.” Most Americans like compromise the most on the issues they care about the least.
